Is your dog overweight?

Run your hands along your dog's sides. You should feel the ribs easily without pressing, and see a waist when you look down from above. If you cannot, your dog is likely carrying extra weight. Labradors, Beagles and Pugs are especially prone, and so are dogs after neutering. Weight loss works best slowly, at one to two percent of body weight a week, with measured portions, treats under 10% of daily calories and a little more walking.

How does weight loss dog food work?

Through measured calories rather than a special formula. We work out your dog's daily needs from weight, age, breed and activity, then portion every meal against it. As the weight comes down, update the profile and we reduce the portion.

How quickly should a dog lose weight?

Slowly. One to two percent of body weight per week is considered safe. Faster than that risks muscle loss. Weigh your dog every two weeks and adjust the portion rather than cutting food sharply.

Will my dog still feel full on smaller portions?

Fresh food has more moisture and fibre than kibble at the same calorie count, so the bowl looks and feels bigger. Psyllium husk, pumpkin and green peas add bulk without adding much energy.

How do I know if my dog is overweight?

Feel along the sides: ribs should be easy to feel without pressing, and you should see a waist from above. If not, your dog is likely overweight. Labradors, Beagles and Pugs are prone to it. Your vet can confirm a healthy target weight.

Can my dog still have treats while losing weight?

Yes, within limits. Keep treats under 10% of daily calories and count them in the day's total. Swap biscuits for small pieces of carrot or cucumber, or hold back part of the meal portion to use as training rewards.
