Why is my dog a picky eater?

Often it is the food itself. Dry kibble has little smell and almost no moisture, and dogs choose food by smell first. Other common causes are too many treats, table scraps, or a bowl that is topped up all day. Sudden refusal is different: if your dog stopped eating overnight, see a vet to rule out dental pain or nausea. For a dog that has slowly lost interest, fresh food that smells like food, served at set meal times, usually changes things within a week.

Questions dog parents ask

Will this work if my dog refuses everything?
Usually. Fresh food has a smell that dry food does not, and that is often the whole problem. If your dog stopped eating suddenly rather than slowly, ask a vet to check for dental pain or nausea first.
How do I switch a fussy eater to fresh food?
Slowly. Mix a small amount of fresh food with the current food and increase it over several days. With fussy eaters, many pet parents find the dog starts picking out the fresh food, which means you can move faster.
Can I add bone broth to get my dog to eat?
Yes, and it is the thing we see work most often. A pour of chicken bone broth over the bowl gets most reluctant dogs eating. It is ₹236 and works with fresh food or with the kibble you already use.
What if my dog still won't eat?
Warm the meal to room temperature to release the smell, add a pour of bone broth, and pick the bowl up after 15 to 20 minutes so meals have a set time. Avoid offering something new each time.
Should I keep switching foods until my dog likes one?
No. Switching often can teach a dog to hold out for something better. Pick one fresh recipe, give it a week with set meal times and no extras, then judge. Most fussy dogs settle once they learn the next meal is the same good food.
Is it normal for a dog to skip a meal?
An occasional skipped meal in a healthy adult dog is usually nothing to worry about, especially in hot weather. More than a day without eating, or skipping meals along with vomiting, lethargy or weight loss, needs a vet. Puppies should not skip meals.
